The bulk sweetening ingredient
with a minimal caloric contribution.

Allulose combines a familiar, sucrose-like sensory profile with a very different metabolic pathway. For food and beverage formulations, this makes it particularly interesting as a bulk sweetening ingredient for products designed with lower calorie targets in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Allulose is a monosaccharide and thus has the molecular structure of a sugar. It occurs naturally in very small amounts in foods such as figs. In the ingredients context, it is a so-called specialty ingredient, delivering added value.

In most markets, allulose is simply labelled as “Allulose” on the package, not as sugar or carbohydrate. The regional authorities decide about the labelling, but as allulose is not metabolised like conventional sugar, this is the most common labelling. In the US, 0.4 kcal per gram can be used for allulose on the Nutrition Facts labelling. Allulose is included as a “Total carbohydrate”, but may be excluded from “Total sugars” and “Added sugars”.

‘Clean label’ has no generally applicable legal definition. SAVANNA Allulose is a single-ingredient product. Positioning and claims for the finished product remain the responsibility of the manufacturer and must be assessed for the target market.

Savanna Allulose is derived from renewable, plant-based materials using a proprietary enzymatic process. It is manufactured in Germany under established food safety and quality systems, supporting traceability and consistent product quality.

Allulose has been on the market for many years in many regions of the world, including the US, where it is GRAS for its intended uses. Allulose is a proven ingredient and is backed by science. There are many studies that support not only its safety but also its nutritional and physiological properties.

No reliable date can currently be given. The approval process in the EU is still ongoing, but SAVANNA Ingredients – as one of the European pioneers in allulose – is actively involved as an applicant. In the meantime, SAVANNA Ingredients helps manufacturers prepare for market entry by developing product prototypes for research and development purposes or working on the reformulation of existing products.
